Snowbird season moves prices

No source publishes monthly prices by state, so this is what the studies say about timing.

Demand runs heavily southbound from October to December and northbound from March to May. Booking three to six weeks ahead of those windows gives carriers room to schedule the pickup.

Direct Connect Auto Transport reports snowbird routes running 5% to 8% higher.

When to ship

Why ship your car in Arizona?

Almost everything particular about Arizona lands after the car does. The state charges an annual vehicle license tax in place of the property tax other states levy, worked from the sticker price rather than a flat fee, so a newer car arriving here meets a bill nobody warned about. Phoenix and Tucson will not register a car shipped in from out of state until it has passed an emissions test, and a seven-month clock decides whether a winter visitor has to register at all. The drive in is the simple part.

  • An annual vehicle license tax replaces property tax, set at 60% of the sticker price and falling 16.25% a year
  • Cars registered in metro Phoenix (Area A) or Tucson (Area B) must pass an emissions test first
  • A car here under seven months, and not run by an Arizona resident, need not be registered
  • I-10 is the through-route for California, Texas and the Southwest — and the road the dust storms close
  • Summer monsoon haboobs, mid-June to late September, shut I-10 between Phoenix and Tucson with little warning

Flexible pickup dates and a nearby meeting point usually get you a lower price.

Good to know in Arizona

The things that actually move a pickup date here.

  • The tax nobody budgets for is annual, not one-time

Arizona charges a vehicle license tax every year in place of the personal property tax many states levy, and it is worked from the car rather than a flat fee: the first year values the vehicle at 60 percent of the manufacturer's base retail price, and each following year takes 16.25 percent off that value. The rate runs about $2.80 per $100 of value in the first year and $2.89 after, with a $10 floor. On a recent, expensive car it is the largest line on the registration by far, and it returns every renewal, so it belongs in the arrival budget rather than as a surprise at the counter.

  • Seven months is the line between visitor and resident

Arizona requires registration once a car owned by a nonresident is primarily under the control of an Arizona resident for more than seven months. That is the test a snowbird's shipment turns on: a genuine winter visitor whose car stays in their own hands for the season does not have to register it, while a car left with family, or kept here past seven months, does. It is worth settling before you ship, because it decides whether the vehicle license tax above is a bill you owe at all.

  • Phoenix and Tucson check the tailpipe before they will register the car

In the Phoenix metro area (Area A) and the Tucson area (Area B), a car cannot be registered until it has passed an emissions inspection, and a vehicle shipped in from another state has to clear one before its first Arizona registration. Nobody can run that test until the car is physically here, so it sits on the arrival list with the paperwork, not the departure one. Outside those two metros the requirement does not apply, which is one more reason where you are landing matters as much as when.

  • The dust storms close the one road everything uses

Arizona's freight runs on I-10, the corridor that carries cars to and from California, Texas and the rest of the Southwest. During the summer monsoon, from mid-June to late September, thunderstorm winds throw up haboobs — walls of dust miles wide — and the National Weather Service warns they reduce visibility to nothing and cause chain-collision pileups, arriving with little warning on I-10 between Phoenix and Tucson. A carrier caught in one pulls off and waits it out, which moves an arrival by hours rather than days, but it is the most Arizona reason a summer transit slips. Book a window in those months, not a promised hour.
