Snowbird season moves prices

No source publishes monthly prices by state, so this is what the studies say about timing.

Demand runs heavily southbound from October to December and northbound from March to May. Booking three to six weeks ahead of those windows gives carriers room to schedule the pickup.

Direct Connect Auto Transport reports snowbird routes running 5% to 8% higher.

When to ship

Why ship your car in Texas?

Texas is big enough that an in-state move is a long-haul job: El Paso to Houston is a longer trip than Atlanta to Miami, and a carrier prices and schedules it accordingly. It is also the only state where one page has to cover a hurricane coast and a snow-prone panhandle, so the season that matters to your shipment depends entirely on which end of Texas you are standing in.

  • An in-state move can be longer than many interstate ones
  • I-35 is the spine: Dallas, Austin and San Antonio all sit on it
  • The Gulf coast and the panhandle have opposite seasonal risks
  • Severe storms are the state's commonest billion-dollar disaster by a wide margin
  • Hail is the usual argument for enclosed transport here

Flexible pickup dates and a nearby meeting point usually get you a lower price.

Good to know in Texas

The things that actually move a pickup date here.

  • Inside Texas is still a long-haul trip

El Paso to Houston is farther than Atlanta to Miami, and roughly the distance from Philadelphia to Chicago. A carrier quoting an in-state Texas move is quoting two days of driving, not an afternoon, and prices it on the miles rather than on the fact that both ends share a state line. If you are comparing a Texas quote with one you were given elsewhere, compare the mileage rather than the word "local".

  • Severe storms, not hurricanes, are the recurring risk

NOAA counts 190 billion-dollar weather disasters in Texas between 1980 and 2024, and 126 of them were severe storms — more than tropical cyclones, flooding, winter storms and wildfires combined. The five years to 2024 averaged 13.6 such events a year against a long-run average of 4.2. This is the practical case for enclosed transport in Texas, and the reason a spring pickup date is worth treating as a window.

  • Which season matters depends on which end of the state you are in

A pickup on the Gulf coast near Houston or Corpus Christi runs into hurricane season between June and November. A pickup in Amarillo or Lubbock runs into winter weather instead, six hundred miles north and several thousand feet higher. The same state page covers both, so take the seasonal advice that matches your actual city rather than the state.

  • I-35 is where the trucks already are

Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin and San Antonio sit on one corridor, which is why carriers run it constantly and why pickups along it are easier to schedule than anywhere else in the state. Houston hangs off it on I-10 and I-45. A pickup well away from those roads — much of west Texas, the Big Bend, the far panhandle — waits longer for a truck, and meeting a carrier at a town on the corridor is usually the faster option.
