Who Moves the Car? The Federal Licenses Behind Car Shipping Companies

The federal register shows which car shipping companies are licensed to move vehicles and which are licensed only to arrange it. Haulwide checked the records of all 16 companies it lists.

Summary

Every one of the 16 car shipping companies Haulwide lists holds broker authority from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and none holds carrier authority. Each arranges transport and assigns the vehicle to a separate trucking company. Nine of the 16 publish a policy of taking no payment before a carrier is assigned.

Why the license type matters

The FMCSA licenses brokers and motor carriers separately. A broker arranges the move and hands it to a carrier; the carrier is the company whose truck and driver collect the vehicle. The two are held to different federal requirements:

  • Auto transport brokers need FMCSA broker authority and $75,000 in financial security, usually a BMC-84 surety bond or a BMC-85 trust fund. (49 CFR 387.307)
  • Most for-hire interstate carriers must file at least $750,000 in liability coverage with the FMCSA. Cargo coverage for the cars on the truck is set by the carrier, so ask for the certificate. (49 CFR 387.9)

A broker's bond is financial security that protects carriers who aren't paid, and shippers in certain circumstances — not cover for damage to a vehicle. The coverage that applies to a vehicle on the truck is the carrier's, which is why a damage claim is usually handled with a company the customer did not book with directly.

All 16 are licensed as brokers

All 16 companies hold active broker authority on the FMCSA register, and none of them also holds carrier authority. Booking with any of them means the vehicle is moved by another company, which the broker chooses.

This is not a warning. Brokering is legal and a common way car shipping is sold to consumers; a broker can search many carriers for a route. It does mean the name on the booking and the name on the truck will usually differ, and it is worth asking a broker which carrier has been assigned and asking that carrier for its insurance certificate.

Payment terms: who says they take nothing upfront

Nine of the 16 companies publish a policy of taking no payment until a carrier is assigned or dispatched. For the other seven, Haulwide found no such statement on their sites.

“Not found” means the company does not publish the policy, not that it charges upfront. Some of those companies may take no deposit in practice; the terms in a written quote are what count.

Where they are registered: Florida leads

Four of the 16 companies have their FMCSA address in Florida, more than any other state; no other state has more than two.

How long they have been on the register

Three of the 16 records were added to the FMCSA register in 2021 or later: Bold Auto Transport (2021), Sherpa Auto Transport (2023), Navi Auto Transport (2024).

The year the FMCSA added a record is not the year a company was founded. Six records show 2011, and five of those belong to companies that say they were founded earlier, so this study reports only the recent end, where the year is informative.

Stated headquarters and registered address

Two of the 16 companies state a headquarters in a different state from the address on their FMCSA record: Navi Auto Transport (states Brookfield, WI; registered in Lewes, DE); Sherpa Auto Transport (states Charlotte, NC; registered in Tucker, GA).

A company can register one address and work from another, so this is not in itself a problem. It is worth knowing when matching a company to its record.

Methodology and limits

Companies. The 16 car shipping companies Haulwide listed on Sep 21, 2026: widely reviewed, consumer-facing brands whose USDOT numbers could be matched to the right FMCSA record. They were chosen for being what consumers encounter, not at random, so the results describe these companies and not the industry as a whole.

Companies not listed. Haulwide researched five further companies on the same day that were not listed when the study was published, so they are not in the table. One of them holds both broker and carrier authority. Counting all 21 researched companies, 20 are broker-only.

FMCSA records. Operating authority, USDOT and MC numbers, legal name, registered address, registration status and the year each record was added come from the FMCSA Company Census File on data.transportation.gov, checked Sep 15, 2026. Records change; the FMCSA snapshot linked from each row is always current.

Payment terms and headquarters. Taken from each company's own website or a named third party, as listed on its Haulwide profile. Haulwide did not book shipments to test them.

No ratings. The study reports federal records and published terms only. It does not score or rank the companies.

Frequently asked questions

  • What does it mean that a car shipping company is a broker?

A broker is licensed by the FMCSA to arrange transport, not to move vehicles. It takes the booking and assigns the job to a motor carrier, which is the company whose truck arrives. The carrier's cargo coverage is what applies to the vehicle while it is on the truck.

    Broker vs. carrier
  • Is booking through a broker a bad idea?

No. Brokering is legal, ordinary and a common way car shipping is sold to consumers. The point of the study is that the license type decides who holds the cargo coverage and who handles a damage claim, which is worth knowing before booking.

  • How can I check a company's license myself?

Search the company's USDOT or MC number on the FMCSA's SAFER company snapshot. Every row in the table links straight to that company's snapshot, so each figure can be checked at the source.

    Check a company
  • Why only 16 companies?

These are the companies Haulwide listed when the study was published: widely reviewed, consumer-facing car shipping brands whose USDOT numbers could be matched to the right FMCSA record. They are not a random sample, and thousands of brokers and carriers hold FMCSA authority.

  • Can I use this data?

Yes. Please credit Haulwide and link to this page, so readers can see the date the records were checked and how the companies were chosen.
