Winter weather affects pickup, not just price

No source publishes monthly prices by state, so this is what the studies say about timing.

Storms and mountain passes can delay a truck that is already on the road, so a wider pickup window matters more here than a slightly lower quote.

Why ship your car in Connecticut?

Connecticut's particulars for a car shipment are split between its roads and its tax rolls. The quickest lines through crowded Fairfield County are parkways — Route 15 as the Merritt Parkway and then the Wilbur Cross — and a car carrier is barred from all of them, so a delivery is pushed onto a congested I-95 or down local streets. And once the car is here it meets a property tax the owner pays every year, billed by the town rather than the state, a recurring cost most people moving in never think to budget for.

  • Route 15 runs as two parkways, the Merritt and the Wilbur Cross, and both bar box trucks, tractor-trailers and all trailers
  • Parkway limits of 24 feet long, 8 feet tall and 7 feet 6 inches wide rule out a loaded car carrier, so a Fairfield County drop uses I-95 or local roads
  • CTDOT counts about 130,000 vehicles a day on I-95 between Fairfield and Bridgeport, one of the most heavily traveled roads in the state
  • The car is taxed as property every year by the town, not the state, on 70% of an MSRP-based value, at a rate capped statewide at 32.46 mills
  • New residents get 90 days to register; the newest four model years skip the emissions test, older cars must pass it first

Flexible pickup dates and a nearby meeting point usually get you a lower price.

Good to know in Connecticut

The things that actually move a pickup date here.

  • Route 15 is a parkway, and a car carrier is banned from it

Connecticut keeps three parkways, and two of them share a single route number. Route 15 is the Merritt Parkway from the New York line at Greenwich up to Milford, then the Wilbur Cross Parkway on to Meriden. The Office of the State Traffic Administration bars box trucks, tractor-trailers, every rental truck and all trailers from them, and holds any vehicle to 24 feet long, 8 feet tall and 7 feet 6 inches wide. A loaded car carrier is more than three times that length, so it cannot touch the most direct route through lower Fairfield County and takes I-95 or the surface roads instead. That is slower than the map through Greenwich, Stamford and Norwalk suggests, and it is one reason a delivery there can finish at a meeting point rather than the door.

  • The car draws a property-tax bill from your town every year

Connecticut taxes a car as personal property every year, and the bill comes from the municipality where the car is kept, not from the state — OPM, the state budget office, says plainly that assessment and taxation are run at the town level. Since the October 1, 2024 grand list the value is set a new way: the assessor takes the manufacturer's suggested retail price, applies a statutory depreciation schedule that begins at 85 percent in the first year and steps down with age, and multiplies the result by the statewide assessment ratio of 70 percent. The rate on that figure is a local mill rate, but the state caps it at 32.46 mills for motor vehicles, so even a high-tax town cannot charge its full rate on a car. On anything recent it is a genuine recurring line, and it belongs on the arrival side of the move.

  • The one coastal road a carrier can use is the crowded one

Because the parkways are closed to it, a car carrier serving lower Fairfield County is funneled onto I-95, and that is one of the most heavily traveled roads in the state. CTDOT counts about 130,000 vehicles a day on the stretch between Fairfield and Bridgeport and has the corridor under a dedicated mobility study aimed at its chronic congestion. For a shipment the effect is plain: a pickup or delivery along the coast from Greenwich through Stamford to Bridgeport is a window, not a promised hour, and an early collection is far easier to keep than one in the afternoon crawl. A driver who offers to meet you just off the interstate is usually saving you both the wait.

  • Ninety days to register, with Connecticut insurance and an emissions test

A new resident has 90 days to register a vehicle in Connecticut, counted from the day residency is established, and the DMV will not do it without a Connecticut insurance policy that meets the state minimums. Two steps need the car physically here. Its vehicle identification number has to be verified, and unless the car is new enough to be exempt — the current model year and the three before it are — it has to pass an emissions test before that first registration. Registration is done in person at a DMV office, by appointment only. So the arrival list reads: get Connecticut coverage in place while the car is still on the truck, then book the VIN check, the emissions test and the DMV appointment once it lands.
