Winter weather affects pickup, not just price
No source publishes monthly prices by state, so this is what the studies say about timing.
Storms and mountain passes can delay a truck that is already on the road, so a wider pickup window matters more here than a slightly lower quote.

Why ship your car in Indiana?
Most of what complicates shipping a car in Indiana sits in the northwest corner, where through traffic between Chicago and the East is squeezed across a few crowded miles of the Borman Expressway. That stretch is the toll-free interstate everything crowds onto, while the parallel Indiana Toll Road across the top of the state is a privately run road leased out for decades. Everything else is ordinary — a sixty-day clock on registering the car once you move in, and warm-season storms rather than snow as the usual cause of a lost day.
- The Borman Expressway (I-80/94) is the interstate corridor INDOT calls the state's busiest
- The Borman is toll-free; the parallel Indiana Toll Road and Chicago Skyway both charge
- The Indiana Toll Road runs 157 miles across the north, privately operated under a long-term state lease
- A new resident's vehicle is subject to registration 60 days after they become an Indiana resident
- Severe storms are 72 of Indiana's 100 billion-dollar weather disasters; winter storms only 9
Flexible pickup dates and a nearby meeting point usually get you a lower price.
Good to know in Indiana
The things that actually move a pickup date here.
The busiest few miles in the state are the free ones
Interstates 80 and 94 run together through Northwest Indiana as the Borman Expressway, a corridor of more than fourteen miles from the Illinois line to the I-65 interchange in Lake County that INDOT calls the state's busiest interstate. It is toll-free, while the Indiana Toll Road and the Chicago Skyway that shadow it both charge, so the free road is the one through freight between Chicago and the East crowds onto. For a car carrier the stretch is unavoidable and the least predictable part of an Indiana run, which is why a delivery across the top of the state is given as a window rather than an hour.
The road across the top of the state is privately run
The Indiana Toll Road carries Interstate 90, joined by Interstate 80 for most of its length, 157 miles across the northern edge of the state from the Illinois line to the Ohio line, and it is not run by the state. Under the 2006 Major Moves program Indiana leased it to a private operator — the first time any state had put an existing public toll road under a long-term lease — and the concession is held today by IFM Investors, while the Indiana Finance Authority still owns the road. For a shipment it means the quick way across the top of Indiana carries a distance-based toll, and a carrier counting them may fall back on the slower free US highways instead.
The registration clock runs from residency, not arrival
Indiana does not start the registration clock when the car is delivered. Under Indiana Code 9-18.1-11-4, a vehicle owned by someone who has become an Indiana resident becomes subject to registration on the earlier of two dates: sixty days after that person becomes a resident, or the day they register it. Miss the sixty-day mark and the Bureau of Motor Vehicles treats it as a delinquent registration, which Indiana Code 9-18.1-11-5 makes a Class C infraction with a penalty added. Because the deadline runs from your residency and not from the carrier's drop-off, a car that lands before you move in has not started anyone's clock, so the date you became a resident is the one worth being able to show.
Snow gets the attention; summer storms move the dates
NOAA counts 100 billion-dollar weather disasters in Indiana between 1980 and 2024, and 72 of them were severe storms against just nine winter storms. The pace has quickened: the five years to 2024 averaged 6.2 such events a year, well above the long-run average of 2.2. A Midwest winter is what people plan a move around, but the record says the likelier cause of a lost day in Indiana is a warm-season storm line — wind, hail or a band of thunderstorms crossing the flat middle of the state — rather than snow.
