Storm season can pause pickups

No source publishes monthly prices by state, so this is what the studies say about timing.

Between June and November a named storm can close highways and hold carriers for days. Ship earlier in the window when a date matters.

When to ship

Why ship your car in Louisiana?

Two things stop traffic in Louisiana, and both of them move pickup dates rather than prices. The Gulf hurricane season runs from June into late November, when carriers will not stage on the coast with a named storm in the water. Carnival then closes streets across New Orleans for weeks in late winter, and a loaded car carrier is exactly the vehicle those closures are written to keep out.

  • I-10 and I-12 carry most carrier traffic; I-20 serves the north of the state
  • Hurricane season, 1 June to 30 November, is when pickup dates slip
  • Carnival closes New Orleans streets and restricts large vehicles near parade routes
  • The I-10 Basin Bridge runs 18 miles with no exits, so one wreck reroutes everything
  • New residents have thirty days to register once a Louisiana license is issued

Flexible pickup dates and a nearby meeting point usually get you a lower price.

Good to know in Louisiana

The things that actually move a pickup date here.

  • From June to November, book with slack in the dates

The Atlantic hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November, and NOAA puts the peak at 10 September with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. A named storm in the Gulf does not usually cancel a shipment, but it does pause it: carriers stop staging on the coast, and the backlog clears in the days after. If your move falls in September, agree a pickup window rather than a date, and expect the return leg to be busy once roads reopen.

  • Carnival is the one time door-to-door will not work in New Orleans

The city restricts parking along parade routes for two hours either side of each parade, bans large vehicles from parking within two blocks of a route for four hours either side, and closes parts of the French Quarter to vehicles outright for days at a stretch. An 80-foot carrier cannot work a parade-route block under those rules. Plan on meeting the truck outside the closures, or move the date — drivers know the season and will usually say so first.

  • One wreck on the Basin Bridge delays every carrier on I-10

The Atchafalaya Basin Bridge carries I-10 between Baton Rouge and Lafayette for 18.2 miles across the swamp with no exits along it. When a crash closes it, the state detour runs traffic up to US-190 and back, which adds hours rather than minutes. It is the single most common reason a Louisiana transit slips by half a day, and no carrier can plan around it.

  • Thirty days to register, counted from your license

Louisiana gives a new resident thirty days to apply for registration on a vehicle they own and drive here, and the same thirty days to carry a valid safety inspection certificate. The clock starts on the date a Louisiana driver's license is issued, not the date the car arrives — so if the car lands before you do, the deadline has not started yet. Keep the bill of lading your driver signs at delivery; it is the cleanest proof of when the vehicle got here.
