Pickup window vs. transit time
- Day 0
Book
Compare estimates, choose a company and confirm the price, pickup window and payment terms in writing.
- Before pickup
Carrier assigned
Your order goes to a carrier with space on your route. Busy routes usually fill faster than rural ones.
- A range of days
Pickup window
Pickup happens within an agreed window, not at an exact hour. Drivers usually call ahead to set a time.
In transit
Time on the road depends on distance, weather, other stops and drivers' required rest breaks.
- On arrival
Delivery
Inspect the car against the Bill of Lading and note any new damage before you sign.
What can slow a shipment from Boston
- The street grid predates the truckBeacon Hill, the North End, Southie and Cambridge have streets that are narrow, one-way, often cobbled and parked solid on both sides. A car carrier cannot enter, and a driver who says so is not being difficult. Agree the meeting point when you book rather than on the doorstep.
- September 1 is a genuine capacity eventA large share of the region's leases turn over at the start of September, and the whole city moves in the same few days. Trucks, parking and patience all run short. If you can ship a car in the last week of August or the second week of September instead, do.
- A snow emergency stops everythingWhen the city declares one, street parking is suspended and cars are towed off the routes plows need. No carrier will attempt a pickup in that window. Between December and March, ask what happens to your booking if a storm lands on the date, before you book.
- Road salt is heavy through the winterNew England salts aggressively, and an open carrier means the whole trip is spent in that spray. It washes off an ordinary car. For anything with original paint or fresh underbody work, winter is the one time the enclosed premium out of Boston plainly earns itself.
Truck drivers may drive up to 11 hours after 10 consecutive hours off duty, which is why long routes are measured in days, not hours. Source: FMCSA hours of service
Standard vs. expedited shipping
Example: Boston to Los Angeles.
Standard shipping
7–13 days in transit
- Most cost-effective
- Widest choice of carriers
- Good for flexible schedules
Expedited shipping
Sooner pickup; similar time on the road
- Priority carrier assignment
- Shorter wait for pickup
- Costs more
Delivery dates are estimates. Weather, freeway closures and other stops on the truck's route can add time, so plan a little buffer.
