Book
Compare estimates, choose a company and confirm the price, pickup window and payment terms in writing.
- Before pickup
Carrier assigned
Your order goes to a carrier with space on your route. Busy routes usually fill faster than rural ones.
- A range of days
Pickup window
Pickup happens within an agreed window, not at an exact hour. Drivers usually call ahead to set a time.
In transit
Time on the road depends on distance, weather, other stops and drivers' required rest breaks.
- On arrival
Delivery
Inspect the car against the Bill of Lading and note any new damage before you sign.
What can slow a shipment from Detroit
- The industry's home base is an advantageFinished-vehicle hauling has been run out of southeast Michigan for a century, so the trucks, terminals and experienced drivers are here in a density no other metro matches. A car leaving Detroit has more carriers competing for it than the city's size alone would suggest.
- Windsor is a different country, not a suburbThe Ambassador Bridge and the tunnel are minutes from downtown, but taking a vehicle across is a customs process with its own paperwork and its own kind of carrier. An ordinary domestic quote does not cover it, and one that implies otherwise is worth questioning.
- Salt is the winter argument for enclosedMichigan salts hard from December through March and an open deck means your car rides through that spray for the whole trip. It rinses off a daily driver. For a restored car, original paint or fresh underbody work, this is the season where the enclosed premium is a real decision.
- Room to work, in most of the metroDetroit and its suburbs were laid out around the plants, with wide roads, mile-grid arterials and large lots everywhere. Door pickup is usually straightforward, and the exceptions are dense older blocks rather than anything structural.
Truck drivers may drive up to 11 hours after 10 consecutive hours off duty, which is why long routes are measured in days, not hours. Source: FMCSA hours of service
Standard vs. expedited shipping
Example: Detroit to Los Angeles.
Standard shipping
5–10 days in transit
- Most cost-effective
- Widest choice of carriers
- Good for flexible schedules
Expedited shipping
Sooner pickup; similar time on the road
- Priority carrier assignment
- Shorter wait for pickup
- Costs more
Delivery dates are estimates. Weather, freeway closures and other stops on the truck's route can add time, so plan a little buffer.
