Winter weather affects pickup, not just price

No source publishes monthly prices by state, so this is what the studies say about timing.

Storms and mountain passes can delay a truck that is already on the road, so a wider pickup window matters more here than a slightly lower quote.

Why ship your car in Ohio?

Ohio's weather is not one weather. The northeast corner of the state sits in a lake-effect snowbelt that can take feet of snow while Columbus and Cincinnati take inches, and the National Weather Service has recorded events there that closed Interstate 90 outright and left drivers stranded for hours. Everywhere else in Ohio, the thing that moves a delivery date is an ordinary storm line rather than the lake.

  • The northeast snowbelt can take 2 to 5 feet in a single lake-effect event
  • I-90 has been closed outright in those events, stranding drivers
  • Columbus and Cincinnati rarely see anything comparable
  • I-71 and I-70 cross in Columbus; I-75 runs the western side
  • Severe storms are 69 of the state's 105 billion-dollar disasters

Flexible pickup dates and a nearby meeting point usually get you a lower price.

Good to know in Ohio

The things that actually move a pickup date here.

  • A delivery to Cleveland and one to Columbus are different jobs in winter

In one five-day lake-effect event the National Weather Service recorded 2 to 5 feet across the snowbelt of northeast Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania, and parts of Interstate 90 and Interstate 86 were closed, stranding motorists for hours. That belt covers Ashtabula, Lake and Geauga counties and the eastern side of Cleveland. A December delivery into it deserves a window rather than a date; the same delivery to Columbus, two hours south, usually does not.

  • The state is crossed rather than visited

I-71 and I-70 meet in Columbus, I-75 runs the western edge from Cincinnati to Toledo, and I-80 crosses the north as the Ohio Turnpike. Most of the carriers in Ohio on any given day are passing through between the Midwest and the East Coast rather than working the state, which is good for supply on those corridors and less good away from them. A pickup in a town off the interstate grid waits longer than the mileage suggests.

  • Storms, not snow, are the larger share of the record

NOAA counts 105 billion-dollar weather disasters in Ohio between 1980 and 2024: 69 severe storms against 12 winter storms. The five years to 2024 averaged 7.2 a year against a long-run average of 2.3. Snow is the more dramatic risk and the one that closes roads, but across the year an ordinary storm line is what a carrier is more often working around.
