Book
Compare estimates, choose a company and confirm the price, pickup window and payment terms in writing.
- Before pickup
Carrier assigned
Your order goes to a carrier with space on your route. Busy routes usually fill faster than rural ones.
- A range of days
Pickup window
Pickup happens within an agreed window, not at an exact hour. Drivers usually call ahead to set a time.
In transit
Time on the road depends on distance, weather, other stops and drivers' required rest breaks.
- On arrival
Delivery
Inspect the car against the Bill of Lading and note any new damage before you sign.
What can slow a shipment from Pittsburgh
- The terrain is the whole storyStreets in Mount Washington, Polish Hill, the South Side Slopes and much of the North Side climb at grades a loaded car carrier will not take, and several have steps instead of sidewalks. This is not a driver being cautious; the truck physically cannot do it.
- Tunnels and bridges set the routeThe Fort Pitt and Squirrel Hill tunnels and the river bridges all carry their own restrictions, and a carrier's path through the city is decided by them. That is why a driver may ask you to meet somewhere that seems out of the way but is actually the only approach that works.
- The good lanes are just outside townI-76, the Pennsylvania Turnpike, runs east to Harrisburg and Philadelphia, and I-79 runs north to Erie and south to West Virginia. Both pass near rather than through the city, which is why suburban handovers along them are usually quicker to arrange than a city address.
- Winter and hills do not mixA grade that a carrier would manage in June is off the table with ice on it. Between December and March, expect more meeting points and more flexible windows than you would need in a flat city with the same amount of snow.
Truck drivers may drive up to 11 hours after 10 consecutive hours off duty, which is why long routes are measured in days, not hours. Source: FMCSA hours of service
Standard vs. expedited shipping
Example: Pittsburgh to Los Angeles.
Standard shipping
6–11 days in transit
- Most cost-effective
- Widest choice of carriers
- Good for flexible schedules
Expedited shipping
Sooner pickup; similar time on the road
- Priority carrier assignment
- Shorter wait for pickup
- Costs more
Delivery dates are estimates. Weather, freeway closures and other stops on the truck's route can add time, so plan a little buffer.
