Storm season can pause pickups

No source publishes monthly prices by state, so this is what the studies say about timing.

Between June and November a named storm can close highways and hold carriers for days. Ship earlier in the window when a date matters.

When to ship

Why ship your car in South Carolina?

South Carolina packs three different shipping states into one. The Upstate around Spartanburg is home to the largest BMW plant in the world and, by the company's own figures, the largest US automotive exporter by value, so a quote near there or near Charleston can be a plant or port run rather than a door move. On the coast the roads themselves change in a storm: when the state orders an evacuation it reverses the lanes of I-26 inland toward Columbia, and pickups along the corridor stop until the order lifts.

  • BMW's Plant Spartanburg is the largest BMW plant in the world and, by the company's figures, the top US auto exporter by value
  • In 2022 it exported 227,029 vehicles, more than 182,000 of them through the Port of Charleston
  • In a coastal evacuation, I-26's eastbound lanes are reversed inland to Columbia and every entry point is closed
  • Tropical cyclones are 25 of the state's 101 billion-dollar disasters but about 67% of the cost
  • No vehicle sales tax: a one-time Infrastructure Maintenance Fee applies, $250 on a car brought in from out of state

Flexible pickup dates and a nearby meeting point usually get you a lower price.

Good to know in South Carolina

The things that actually move a pickup date here.

  • A pickup near Spartanburg or Charleston may be a factory export, not a move

BMW's Plant Spartanburg is the largest BMW plant in the world, with capacity for up to 450,000 vehicles a year, and by the company's own figures it has been the largest US automotive exporter by value for nine years running. In 2022 it exported 227,029 X models, more than 182,000 of them leaving the country through the Port of Charleston and the rest through Savannah, Brunswick, Jacksonville, Port Everglades and Baltimore. So the Upstate around Spartanburg and the coast around Charleston are busy with finished cars moving to a plant or a dock. If your pickup or drop is near either, it is worth asking whether the quote is a door move or a terminal run.

  • I-26 flips direction in an evacuation, and pickups along it stop

Under the state's hurricane plan, when the coast is ordered to evacuate the eastbound lanes of I-26 are reversed so that both directions carry traffic inland, from a crossover near Nexton at Summerville all the way to the interstate's junction with I-77 in Columbia. While the reversal is in effect, every entry point to the reversed lanes is closed. A car carrier cannot load or unload on a contraflowed interstate, so a pickup or delivery set for I-26 or the roads feeding it waits until the evacuation order lifts and the lanes flip back.

  • Rare storms, most of the damage

NOAA counts 101 billion-dollar weather disasters in South Carolina between 1980 and 2024. Tropical cyclones are only 25 of them, yet they carry roughly 67 percent of the total cost, while the 44 severe storms that top the count account for about 12 percent. The Atlantic season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks around September 10, with most activity from mid-August to mid-October. That is the shape of the coastal risk: most days pass without incident, and the exceptions shut the road network for days. Between those dates, a coastal pickup is worth booking as a window rather than a fixed day.

  • South Carolina swaps vehicle sales tax for a capped fee

South Carolina does not levy a sales tax on a vehicle. In its place the state charges a one-time Infrastructure Maintenance Fee when a car is titled and registered: five percent of the price up to a cap of $500, and a flat $250 on a car brought into the state already registered elsewhere (Code Section 56-3-627). A new resident has 45 days to register once the car is here. Both the fee and the clock sit on the arrival side of the move rather than the departure one, so settle them after the vehicle lands, not before.
