Prices move with the season

No source publishes monthly prices by state, so this is what the studies say about timing.

Summer moving season and the holidays tighten truck space, while mid-January to February is usually the quietest stretch of the year.

Direct Connect Auto Transport reports 2026 versus 2025 running 3% to 8% higher.

Why ship your car in Tennessee?

Tennessee asks less of a car than almost any state once it arrives: there is no personal income tax, no emissions test and no safety inspection to pass before a shipped-in vehicle can be registered. What the state does have is one mountain chokepoint — I-40 through the Pigeon River Gorge at the North Carolina line, under a years-long rebuild since Hurricane Helene — that decides how long an east-west crossing of the Smokies actually takes.

  • No personal income tax: the Hall tax on dividends and interest was repealed for tax years beginning January 1, 2021
  • No county in Tennessee still runs a vehicle emissions test; EPA approved removing the program effective September 16, 2021
  • No statewide safety inspection either, so a shipped-in car needs nothing checked before it is registered
  • I-40 through the Pigeon River Gorge at the North Carolina line has been under long-term closure since Hurricane Helene on September 27, 2024
  • Severe storms are 68 of the state's 116 billion-dollar disasters recorded since 1980

Flexible pickup dates and a nearby meeting point usually get you a lower price.

Good to know in Tennessee

The things that actually move a pickup date here.

  • The gorge that decides an east-west crossing

I-40 is the main interstate route east out of Tennessee into North Carolina, threading the Pigeon River Gorge through Cocke County to cross the mountains. Hurricane Helene closed that stretch on September 27, 2024, and the damage was severe enough that TDOT's detour 'will be in place until I-40 restoration work is complete' — a rebuild measured in years, with its own detour maps for over-dimension loads. There is no short way around a closed gorge: the alternate loops far north through the valley and adds hours to any east-west run. A carrier crossing the Smokies here quotes a window rather than an arrival time while that work continues.

  • No income tax, and the inbound pull it creates

Tennessee levies no tax on personal income, and the last remnant of one is gone: the Hall income tax on certain dividends and interest was repealed for tax years beginning January 1, 2021. It touches a car shipment only indirectly, but the direction is real — a state with no income tax draws steady inbound moves, and a market that takes in more cars than it sends out is usually easier to book into than out of. The tax side asks nothing of the vehicle itself, so the only clock on a new resident is the ordinary one to title and register the car.

  • Nothing to inspect before you register it

A car shipped into Tennessee clears no inspection before it can go on the road. The state runs no periodic safety inspection, and the emissions test that the Nashville area and Chattanooga once required is gone: EPA approved removing the vehicle inspection-and-maintenance program from Tennessee's clean-air plan for Davidson, Rutherford, Sumner, Williamson and Wilson counties and for Hamilton County, effective September 16, 2021, and the testing stations have since closed. That takes a step off the arrival list that other states leave on it — there is nothing to schedule once the car lands, only the title and registration paperwork at the county clerk.

  • Storm lines, not hurricanes, move a Tennessee date

NOAA counts 116 billion-dollar weather disasters in Tennessee between 1980 and 2024, and 68 of them were severe storms — more than droughts, winter storms, tropical cyclones and flooding put together. The five years to 2024 averaged 7.8 such events a year against a long-run average of 2.6. The state takes severe thunderstorm and tornado outbreaks in both spring and late fall, so the weather that slips a Tennessee pickup is a storm line rather than a hurricane or a blizzard, and it is why a carrier gives a delivery window instead of a promised hour.
