Pickup window vs. transit time

  1. Day 0

    Book

Compare estimates, choose a company and confirm the price, pickup window and payment terms in writing.

  2. Before pickup

    Carrier assigned

Your order goes to a carrier with space on your route. Busy routes usually fill faster than rural ones.

  3. A range of days

    Pickup window

Pickup happens within an agreed window, not at an exact hour. Drivers usually call ahead to set a time.

  4. In transit

Time on the road depends on distance, weather, other stops and drivers' required rest breaks.

  5. On arrival

    Delivery

Inspect the car against the Bill of Lading and note any new damage before you sign.

What can slow a shipment from Houston

  • Hurricane season is a scheduling fact, not a scareNOAA puts the Atlantic hurricane season at June 1 to November 30. In practice that means a named storm in the Gulf can pause pickups for a few days, and carriers will not load into an evacuation route. If your move falls in that window, build slack into the delivery date rather than the pickup date.
  • Two national corridors cross hereI-10 runs coast to coast through Houston and I-45 links it to Dallas and Galveston. A carrier heading to Phoenix, Los Angeles, Jacksonville or Atlanta is already on your road, which is why Houston has better carrier supply than its distance from the coasts would suggest.
  • Port Houston is where an overseas move beginsIf the car is going abroad rather than across the country, it is trucked to the port complex on the ship channel and handed to an ocean carrier. That is a different service from auto transport, and it is quoted separately.
  • Summer heat, not cold, is the vehicle riskCars sit on open decks in full sun through a Houston August. Check tire pressures before pickup and do not leave anything in the car that warps, melts or bursts. It is the local version of the salt problem northern cities have.

Truck drivers may drive up to 11 hours after 10 consecutive hours off duty, which is why long routes are measured in days, not hours. Source: FMCSA hours of service

Standard vs. expedited shipping

Example: Houston to Los Angeles.

Standard shipping

4–7 days in transit

  • Most cost-effective
  • Widest choice of carriers
  • Good for flexible schedules

Expedited shipping

Sooner pickup; similar time on the road

  • Priority carrier assignment
  • Shorter wait for pickup
  • Costs more

Delivery dates are estimates. Weather, freeway closures and other stops on the truck's route can add time, so plan a little buffer.
