Book
Compare estimates, choose a company and confirm the price, pickup window and payment terms in writing.
- Before pickup
Carrier assigned
Your order goes to a carrier with space on your route. Busy routes usually fill faster than rural ones.
- A range of days
Pickup window
Pickup happens within an agreed window, not at an exact hour. Drivers usually call ahead to set a time.
In transit
Time on the road depends on distance, weather, other stops and drivers' required rest breaks.
- On arrival
Delivery
Inspect the car against the Bill of Lading and note any new damage before you sign.
What can slow a shipment from Vancouver
- Two bridges, and nothing elseThe Columbia River separates Vancouver from Portland, and only two highways cross it: I-5 on the Interstate Bridge and I-205 on the Glenn Jackson Bridge. Every carrier coming from the Oregon side funnels through one of them, which is why a Vancouver pickup is planned around the bridges rather than the street address.
- The I-5 bridge is a drawbridgeThe I-5 Interstate Bridge is a pair of vertical-lift spans dating to 1917 and 1958 that still raise for tall river traffic, briefly stopping the freeway. Carriers often favor the newer, higher I-205 Glenn Jackson Bridge for that reason, so a pickup on the east side of Vancouver can be quicker to arrange.
- This is the Portland marketVancouver's carrier supply, staging lots and long-haul lanes are really Portland's, because the trucks work both banks of the river as one metro. That is good for availability, and it means a driver may offer to meet you just across in Oregon rather than cross the bridges twice.
- Going east follows the GorgeWA-14 runs east from Vancouver along the Washington side of the Columbia Gorge, the same corridor where freezing rain closes roads in winter that I-84 faces on the Oregon bank. An eastbound winter booking should treat the delivery date as approximate, while a run south on I-5 rarely needs that slack.
Truck drivers may drive up to 11 hours after 10 consecutive hours off duty, which is why long routes are measured in days, not hours. Source: FMCSA hours of service
Standard vs. expedited shipping
Example: Vancouver to Los Angeles.
Standard shipping
2–4 days in transit
- Most cost-effective
- Widest choice of carriers
- Good for flexible schedules
Expedited shipping
Sooner pickup; similar time on the road
- Priority carrier assignment
- Shorter wait for pickup
- Costs more
Delivery dates are estimates. Weather, freeway closures and other stops on the truck's route can add time, so plan a little buffer.
