Moving to Oklahoma
The turnpikes are cashless, and the bill follows the plate
The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority's twelve turnpikes add up to more than six hundred miles, and in November 2024 it finished the job of making every one of them cashless, converting the last stretch, the Will Rogers between Tulsa and the Missouri line, to open-road tolling. No booths remain anywhere on the system. A truck carrying a PikePass transponder is charged to a prepaid account; a truck without one is photographed as it passes beneath the gantry, and the Authority mails an invoice to whoever the license plate is registered to, payable online roughly five days after the trip. For a car in transit that is a quiet trap, because the plate on it may still answer to the previous owner or to an out-of-state address, so a single crossing can reach the wrong mailbox or the right one weeks late. Settle who holds the plate before the truck rolls.
Three interstates meet in the city, and the long hauls out are toll roads
Interstates 35, 40 and 44 all cross in Oklahoma City, which makes the metro and the run up to Tulsa the easiest places in the state to get a car onto a truck: carriers working Texas to Kansas, the Southwest to Arkansas and St. Louis to the Southern Plains pass through without being sent for. The wrinkle is that I-44's intercity legs are themselves turnpikes — the Turner carries it to Tulsa and the Will Rogers on to the Missouri line — so the cross-state run northeast is tolled for most of its length, while the H.E. Bailey Turnpike extends the network southwest toward Lawton. A driver avoiding tolls drops onto the free US highways instead, US-69 and US-75 down the eastern side, which is slower. Out in the panhandle or the far southeast a pickup waits longer than the mileage suggests, because a truck has to make the trip on purpose.
The crossroads sit in one of the country's worst tornado corridors
The south Oklahoma City and Moore suburbs that the interstates thread have been struck by violent tornadoes twice in a generation, both among the worst ever recorded. On May 3, 1999, a portable Doppler radar clocked winds of roughly 302 mph about thirty-two meters above the ground in the F5 that tore through Bridge Creek and Moore, the fastest wind ever measured near the Earth's surface, though the rating itself is assigned from the damage rather than the reading. On May 20, 2013, a second EF5 crossed Newcastle, south Oklahoma City and Moore on a path about fourteen miles long and, at its widest, more than a mile across, and killed twenty-four people. The season that breeds them peaks in spring, and nothing reroutes around a tornado warning, so a carrier working the metro in April or May books a window rather than a promised hour.
