Moving to Nevada
Only Las Vegas and Reno check the tailpipe before they register a car
Nevada requires an emissions test to register most gasoline and diesel vehicles from the 1968 model year on, but only when the car is based in the urban areas of Clark County around Las Vegas or Washoe County around Reno. Every other county, and even the remote parts of those two, is exempt. A vehicle shipped in from out of state has to pass that test before its first Nevada registration if it lands in either metro, and no one can run it until the car is physically here, so it sits with the arrival paperwork rather than the departure checklist. Where in Nevada you are landing decides whether it applies to you at all.
Thirty days to register, and the insurance has to be Nevada's
Nevada gives a new resident 30 days to register each vehicle they own and drive here, and NRS 482.385 starts that same 30-day clock the day you accept a job in the state or enroll a child in a Nevada public school. The part that trips people up is the insurance: the DMV will not take an out-of-state policy of any kind, so the car has to be covered by insurance written for Nevada before it can be registered. Line up the Nevada policy while the car is still in transit, because the registration cannot exist without it and the clock does not wait for the carrier.
Two cities, and a lot of nothing in between
Nevada's people sit at two far-apart corners, Las Vegas in the south and the Reno and Carson City area in the north, with a wide and almost empty interior between them. Carriers run the two interstates, I-15 toward Southern California and I-80 across the north, and supply thins out quickly away from those lines. The roads through the middle are US-95 and US-50; the latter was named "the Loneliest Road in America" by Life magazine in 1986 and crosses more than 400 miles of the state with only three towns of any size, Austin, Eureka and Ely, along it. A pickup in a small interior town such as Tonopah or Ely waits longer for a truck than the mileage suggests, because a driver has to make the trip out specially.
