Moving to Minnesota

  • The yearly tax is scaled to the sticker price, not charged as a flat fee

Minnesota sets its annual passenger-vehicle registration tax at $10 plus a percentage of the manufacturer's suggested retail price — 1.575 percent for a car first registered on or after November 16, 2020, and 1.54 percent before that. The value it multiplies is not fixed: the car counts at 100 percent of its original MSRP in the first year, then steps down through 95, 90, 80 and 70 percent and on to 10 percent by the tenth, after which it settles at a small flat amount. On a recent, costly car the first few renewals are the heaviest single charge on the plates, and because it recurs every year instead of once, a newcomer from a flat-fee state should plan for it well beyond the first registration.

  • The season that moves a date here is spring, not winter

Each year MnDOT posts spring load restrictions on the state trunk highways, with start and end dates set zone by zone — roughly early March in the Twin Cities metro through mid-May in the north — because the frost comes out of the ground from beneath and leaves the roadbed soft enough to break under a heavy axle. State law caps a single axle at ten tons on a paved road and five on an unpaved one for the posted weeks, and individual stretches can be posted below even that. A fully loaded car hauler runs heavy, so a spring pickup or drop in a restricted zone is planned around the posted dates rather than against them.

  • Sixty days, and it is the out-of-state plates that are exempt

Minnesota does not start a newcomer's registration clock at the counter the way a hard deadline would. Under statute, a passenger car still carrying valid plates from another state is exempt from Minnesota registration for the owner's first 60 days of residence. If those plates have already expired, or the vehicle is a commercial truck or trailer, there is no grace at all and it must be registered immediately. The 60 days run from when the owner becomes a resident, not from the day the car is dropped off, so a vehicle shipped out ahead of the family does not quietly use up the window.
