Snowbird season moves prices

No source publishes monthly prices for this route, so this is what the studies say about timing.

Demand runs heavily southbound from October to December and northbound from March to May. Booking three to six weeks ahead of those windows gives carriers room to schedule the pickup.

Direct Connect Auto Transport reports snowbird routes running 5% to 8% higher.

Moving to Kentucky? What to do with your car

  • The river crossing that slows the eastern freight run

I-75 is the main truck route between the Great Lakes and Florida, and in Kentucky it joins I-71 to cross the Ohio River into Cincinnati on the Brent Spence Bridge at Covington. The bridge opened in 1963 for about 80,000 vehicles a day and now carries close to double that, which is why ATRI's 2025 list ranks the I-71/I-75 interchange just over the river the eighth worst truck bottleneck in the country and the National Bridge Inventory calls the span functionally obsolete. A federally funded double-decker companion bridge broke ground in spring 2026 and is due to open in 2031, with heavy construction across an eight-mile stretch of I-71/I-75 until then. A carrier running a car north or south through northern Kentucky plans around this crossing rather than a clock.

  • At Louisville the bridge you pick decides the bill

Louisville has five bridges across the Ohio River, and RiverLink tolls three of them with an all-electronic system — no booths, no cash, no stopping. The tolled crossings are the two I-65 spans downtown, the Abraham Lincoln Bridge heading north and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge heading south, and the Lewis and Clark Bridge on the East End at KY 841. The Clark Memorial Bridge on US 31 and the Sherman Minton Bridge on I-64 carry no toll. Anyone crossing a tolled span without a transponder is caught by camera and an invoice is mailed to the vehicle's registered owner, which can take weeks, so an out-of-state plate still tied to the old owner can turn a single crossing into a bill that lands in the wrong mailbox.

  • Kentucky inspects the number, not the car

Before Kentucky will title a vehicle brought in from another state, a county sheriff's office has to inspect it and confirm that the identification number stamped on the car matches the out-of-state title it came with. That result is recorded on the sheriff's inspection line of form TC 96-182, the state's title and registration application, and the county clerk cannot finish the work without it. It is a check on the VIN, not on the mechanics — Kentucky has no periodic safety inspection and runs no vehicle emissions test anywhere in the state, so nothing about the car's condition is examined. For a shipped-in vehicle it adds one errand on arrival: the car and its documents go to the sheriff first, then the clerk, and a new resident has only a short window to get it done.
