The basics

  • What is door-to-door car shipping?

The driver picks up your car at the address you choose and delivers it to your destination address, without a terminal in between.

  • Will the truck come right to my door?

Whenever it can safely do so. If your street is narrow, gated or has low trees or wires, the driver will ask to meet at a nearby open lot.

  • Is door-to-door shipping standard?

Yes. Most car shipping companies quote door-to-door service by default. Ask if you're unsure.

Costs and pricing

  • Does door-to-door shipping cost more?

Usually not. Most quotes already include it. Very rural addresses far from main highways can cost more because the driver travels further off route.

    What affects the cost
  • Is terminal-to-terminal shipping cheaper?

Sometimes slightly, but storage fees and two trips to the terminal often cancel out the savings, and terminals are less common than they used to be.

Timing and pickup

  • Can I get an exact pickup time?

Most shipments use a pickup window of a few days. The driver calls ahead to agree a time once they are close. Expedited service can narrow the window.

  • Do I need to be there for pickup and delivery?

You or someone you trust, aged 18 or over, needs to hand over the keys, walk around the car with the driver and sign the Bill of Lading.

  • Will the driver call before arriving?

Most drivers call ahead, often the day before and again when they are close. Keep your phone on during the pickup window.

Access and locations

  • What if my HOA doesn't allow large trucks?

Tell the company when you book. The driver can meet you at a nearby open lot, or the company can look for a smaller truck.

  • Can I ship a car to an apartment or city address?

Yes, though busy downtown streets often mean meeting at a nearby lot. Share parking and access details when you book.

  • Can a car be delivered to a military base?

Base access rules vary, so many deliveries meet just outside the gate. Check with your installation and the shipping company.

Insurance and preparation

  • Is my car insured during door-to-door shipping?

Yes. The carrier's cargo coverage applies from pickup to delivery. Ask for the certificate of insurance before pickup.

  • How do I prepare for door-to-door pickup?

Wash the car, photograph every side, remove personal items and toll tags, leave about a quarter tank of fuel and clear space for the driver to load.
